A used car is always a gamble. So the only way to insure you come out okay is to put together the best gambling deal you can. If you want to buy a good car with a minimum of risk, start with a recommended dealer.
Almost everyone you now has a car. If they bought it used, ask them where. If the person got a bad deal they are sure to want to tell all about it. By the same reasoning if they got a great deal they may want to brag a little about. Word of mouth is said to be the best advertising. For some dealers it is not. A car dealer with a consistently bad way of doing business will get a reputation fast.
Dealers of used cars that have a normal, honest way of doing business might not stand out or have praise lavished on them, but they will collect a following of happy even enthusiastic customers. Ask your friends, co-workers and neighbors who will have bought cars in the same area you are looking in, about their car buying experience. Chances are you’ll at least find out where not to shop for pre-owned cars. Then head straight away to the ones who got good or better mentions. Usually the large dealers that have been in business for a long time have good reputations.
